In workshop language, Stage 1 usually means a software-only performance calibration for a mechanically healthy, stock-hardware vehicle. Related searches — chip tuning, ECU remapping, ECU tuning — describe the same family of work. FILHEX product language uses Stage 1 and Stage 2 as separate Solutions when the catalog lists them.

Stage 1 vs Stage 2 (industry meaning)

  • Stage 1 — software-only calibration for a healthy stock-hardware car. Typical first performance step for daily drivers.
  • Stage 2 — calibration that expects supporting parts (freer intake, downpipe/exhaust, often intercooler; clutch / TCU work on high-torque cars). Higher targets that assume extra airflow and cooling.

Exact percentage gains vary wildly by platform. Treat marketing “+X%” claims carefully; a good File respects knock, intake temperature, fuel quality, and torque path limits for that ECU variant.

What Stage 1 calibrations usually touch

Depending on petrol vs diesel and ECU family, processors commonly revise:

  • Boost / wastegate or VGT targets (turbo engines)
  • Fuel quantity and injection timing
  • Ignition advance (petrol) within knock control
  • Torque and limiter pathways so the car does not hit artificial caps
  • Throttle / driver-wish behaviour where relevant

Stage 2 builds on the same ideas but assumes the hardware can move more air and reject more heat. Selecting Stage 2 on a stock car is a common mismatch — scan confirms the software supports it; only the workshop can confirm the hardware.
