About EGR Removal
EGR Removal (EGR off, EGR delete, AGR off) retires exhaust gas recirculation in the calibration. EGR feeds a share of exhaust back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and NOx; on a high-mileage diesel that same loop coats the intake manifold, the valve and the swirl flaps in soot and oil vapour until the valve sticks, the position sensor reads nonsense and the ECU logs flow or position plausibility faults. Workshops ask for EGR Removal when a cleaned or replaced valve would fail again, when the repair outweighs the vehicle's value, or alongside DPF work.
What changes in the File
A clean EGR calibration sets the valve's duty and flow targets to closed across operating conditions, handles the position sensor and adaptation logic so the ECU does not keep relearning an open valve, corrects the air-mass and torque paths that assumed recirculated gas, and switches off the related fault codes — the P0401, P0404, P0405, P0406 and P0489 families being the usual ones. A File that only masks codes and relies on hysteresis to hold the valve shut can still drop into limp mode once the valve is unplugged; a full disable does not.
Blanking plates and hardware
Fitting a blanking plate without the File produces exactly the codes above and a warning light. With the File, many workshops still fit a plate so that a valve that fails open cannot leak exhaust into the intake; others leave a healthy valve in place. That is a workshop decision made with the customer. EGR Removal applies to petrol engines with an EGR system as well as diesels, and it is routinely combined with DPF Removal on the same File.

Do I still need a blanking plate after EGR Removal?
The File retires the EGR strategy either way. Many workshops still fit a plate so a valve that fails open cannot leak exhaust into the intake; others leave a healthy valve in place. It is a workshop decision, not a File requirement.
Will EGR Removal cause limp mode or codes?
A full software disable sets the valve closed, handles the position and adaptation logic and retires the P0401–P0406 and P0489 code families. Codes after the job usually point at a plate fitted without the File, a partial File, or a sensor left unplugged — DTC clear on the result File is free for that.
Does EGR Removal work on petrol engines?
Yes, where the engine has an EGR system and scan lists the Solution for that software. The File handles the same control and diagnostic logic as on a diesel.
Is EGR Removal legal?
Not for road use in most European countries. A software-only delete may pass a visual inspection, but a lit warning light or emissions over the limit still fails, and the use itself is an offence in the UK, Germany and elsewhere. Check your country's rules.
